Through the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach implemented by the Diocese of Nyahururu WASH Program, with support from Cross Catholic Outreach, community members in Ndindika Sub-Location, Laikipia County, Kenya, have progressively improved their household sanitation facilities. Following targeted training of local artisans by the program, households have adopted the installation of SATO pans—an appropriate sanitation technology that enhances hygiene practices, preserves dignity, and ensures safe fecal waste disposal at the household level. In addition, they have adopted installation of locally made tippy taps for handwashing practices. This innovation is supporting the community’s gradual transition towards achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.
