ABOUT US
The word Caritas is derived from the Latin word “Carus” which means “Dear or precious”. Hence, Caritas means charity, affection or love. In the Catholic Church, Caritas refers to the Church’s organized efforts to live out the Gospel call to love one another (the Christian love) especially the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable. Caritas has both spiritual mission and practical action towards sharing the love of God. It is embodied through local, national, and international organizations that work under the universal Catholic Church’s guidance to bring relief, promote justice, and foster development in the communities. The most widely known network in the Catholic Church is Caritas Internationalis, a global confederation of over 160 member organizations worldwide. Caritas Internationalis is the umbrella organization for all Caritas Organizations worldwide
In Africa, Caritas Africa serves as the regional branch, focusing on the specific needs of the African Continent. Within the country, Caritas Kenya is the member organization within the national level focusing on the needs of the vulnerable in the communities. Caritas Kenya is the humanitarian and development arm of Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB).
Caritas is rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, particularly the principles of: The dignity of the human person, The preferential option for the poor, Solidarity, Subsidiarity, Care for creation
Within the Catholic Church, Caritas serves by:
- Providing Humanitarian Relief: Offering emergency aid to victims of natural disasters, conflict, and crises (such as food, shelter, healthcare, and psychosocial support).
- Promoting Social Justice: Advocating for the rights and dignity of all, especially the poor and oppressed, often challenging unjust systems and policies.
- Supporting Parish Communities: Assisting parishes to organize charitable activities and build a culture of service and compassion among parishioners.
- Educating and Forming Christians: Offering formation programs to help Catholics understand their duty to love their neighbor and actively serve the society, according to Gospel values.
- Coordinating Catholic Charitable Work: Ensuring that Catholic charity efforts are organized, professional, and aligned with Church teaching, avoiding duplication and promoting collaboration
The Caritas logo is rich in symbolism, reflecting the mission and values of Caritas in the Catholic Church. Though designs may vary slightly in different countries, the main Caritas Internationalis logo is a recognizable red cross combined with stylized flames or rays. Here’s what each part symbolizes:
- The Cross at the Center
- The cross represents Christian faith and Jesus Christ, who is at the heart of Caritas’ mission.
- It reminds us that Caritas’ work is inspired by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, particularly His love and compassion for the vulnerable and suffering.
- The Radiating Flames or Rays
- Surrounding the cross are stylized flames or rays that symbolize love, hope, light, and warmth.
- They show that Caritas brings the warmth of God’s love to the world, reaching out to all people without discrimination.
- The flames also express the idea of the Holy Spirit, who inspires and energizes Caritas’ work.
- The Color Red
- Red is traditionally the color of charity, love, sacrifice, and energy.
- It symbolizes the deep passion Caritas has for service to humanity and the willingness to make sacrifices for justice and peace.
Caritas logo therefore, communicates; the centrality of Christ in all Caritas work, the spread of love, hope, and service to the world, the power of charity and solidarity across all nations, races, and cultures. It visually reminds us that Caritas is not just about helping, but about bringing the transforming love of God to every corner of the world
