A new chapter in community sanitation has been written in Kiambogo Sub-location, where 13 villages have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF), a significant public health milestone for the area. Community members in these villages embraced the community-led total sanitation (CLTS) approach from the very start of the triggering phase, steadily building momentum that has now culminated in this achievement. Through community-led efforts, families took ownership of the process, constructing and improving sanitation facilities in their homes and taking deliberate steps to raise hygiene standards across their villages.

This success was reached through the collective effort of household heads, community members, local administration and church leaders, community health promoters and the Diocese of Nyahururu WASH Program with the support of Cross Catholic Outreach, working hand in hand to improve sanitation and hygiene outcomes in the Sub-Location.

The result is a cleaner, healthier and more dignified Kiambogo sub location, where the growing numbers of households have adopted improved sanitation and hygiene practices, a meaningful stride toward disease prevention and better living conditions for the wider community.

Attaining ODF status reflects the residents’ commitment to ending open defecation and embracing dignity, safety, and health as shared community values.
