The Beans Value Chain project was implemented by Caritas Nyahururu in collaboration with AgriFi CS APP, Government of Kenya, KALRO and the European Union from February 2022 to January 2024. The project was implemented targeting small holder farmers adopting beans value chain in Githiga and Olmoran Wards of Laikipia county. The two-year project aimed at ensuring the communities are food secure, live healthy lives and are economically empowered.
The following achievements were met in the project.
- Adoption of three drought resistant beans varieties, Nyota, Faida and Angaza, in over 2000 households where farmers up scaled from small scale to large scale beans farming.
- Capacity building of farmers in their farmer groups on climate smart agriculture to mitigate through the effects of climate change.
- Creation of long lasting linkages of farmers to input suppliers, financial service providers and ready market for the produced beans.
Despite the exit of the project, the impacts continue to be realized with Caritas Nyahururu following up and engaging farmers through various interventions
