Caritas Nyahururu in partnership with AgriFi CS APP, KALRO, Government of Kenya and the European Union implemented a chicken value chain project in Nyandarua and Lakipia Counties targeting small holder farmers. The project was implemented from April 2020 to March 2022 aiming at improving productivity and increased adoption of the KALRO Improved Indigenous Chicken to improve livelihoods through agribusiness.
The title of the program was, “Improved productivity, production, agribusiness and incomes by 5,000 small holder farmers in Nyandarua and Laikipia counties due to adoption of KALRO indigenous chicken value chain.”
The following achievements were met in the period of implementation;
- Increased adoption of KIIC to over 4000 farmers in the area
- Chicken farmers were linked to affordable and high quality inputs, markets and financial services who provided capital to start or even expand the ventures of chicken farming.
- Farmers in over 200 groups were trained on best chicken rearing practices for improved productivity
- Creation of jobs to thousands of people in over 10 different sectors across the various stages of the value chain.
Provision of incubators to breeding farms and over 30000 chicks to over 4000 farmers at different phases of the project
