Ecosystem Restoration Through Re-aforestation For Improved Livelihoods (ERRIL)

The project focus is guided by the global environment management trends, the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) policies, the respective County Integrated Development Plans (CIDPs) and the CARITAS development philosophy.  The project is funded by ECOSIA- a search engine that grows trees based in Germany and implemented by Caritas Nyahururu. The project started in the year 2023 October with the program focus being guided by the following:

  1. Global environment management trends –SDGs

-SDG 15 – aims at protection, restoration and promotion of sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and stop biodiversity loss.

-SDG 1 of end poverty in all its forms.

-SDG 2 – end hunger, achieving food security and improving nutrition, and promoting Sustainable Agriculture

  1. National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) policies.
  2. County Integrated Development Plans (CIDPs)
  3. Caritas Development Philosophy.

GOAL

To enhance and improve biodiversity conservation, land degradation and effects of climate change mitigation through partnership in establishment of indigenous trees plantation on 100 hectares of degraded forest land and woodlots on 50Ha targeting 2800 smallholder farms for increased household food, nutrition and income security.

ACHIEVEMENT

  • Assorted indigenous seedlings totaling to 100,000 has been procured and 94,000 delivered to Olborosat forest and Ndaragwa forests in collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service and Community Forest Assosiactions. 6000 has been planted among institutions in Nyandarua county.

Caritas is working with 10 primary schools and 4 secondary schools in the implementation of the ERRIL project which is aimed at helping the Organization contribute to the 15B presidential directive by the year 2032
