Growing Knowledge, Changing Perceptions: Agroecology in Schools

For many children, agriculture is often associated with hard work, punishment or an activity reserved for adults. In our area of operation, the project is helping to change this perception by introducing learners to agroecology in a practical, engaging and enjoyable approach.

Through school agroecology clubs, Caritas Nyahururu funded by Fastenacktion is implementing the CATAFS project to create opportunities for learners to understand that agriculture is not a form of punishment, but an important life skill that can contribute to healthy diets, environmental conservation and resilient livelihoods. This helps to promote agroecological principles and practices among learners. Rather than limiting learning to the classroom, learners are encouraged to put their knowledge into practice through activities such as establishing and managing school gardens, learning about tree planting, conserving soil and water and understanding the importance of biodiversity and locally available foods.

The approach gives learners an opportunity to learn by doing. They can see the process from preparing the soil and planting seeds to caring for crops and eventually harvesting food. This practical experience helps make agriculture more interesting and meaningful while building confidence and responsibility among the learners.

Through agroecology education, CATAFS project is planting more than crops. It is planting knowledge, confidence and a new perspective on agriculture among the next generation
