A Self Help Group in Caritas Nyahururu, Makutano C.C. Self-Help Group, now celebrates it’s 10th anniversary since it was form in the year 2016. The group began with 36 members who had a simple vision: to promote a culture of saving, financial discipline and mutual support. Over the past decade, Makutano C.C. SHG has grown to 264 registered members, after gaining popularity in the neighbourhood. Its first 10% dividend in 2017 strengthened members’ confidence and accelerated growth. During the COVID-19 period, the group embraced online banking, enabling it to maintain operations while improving efficiency and reducing cash handling practices as had been the standard practice before the pandemic.
Today, the group continues to transform lives by providing members with access to affordable credit for education, agriculture, businesses start-ups or stocks, healthcare and other household needs. Beyond financial empowerment, it has become a platform for unity and fellowship, bringing together members from different churches and backgrounds.
Central to this success has been the guiding role of Caritas Nyahururu, which has walked alongside the group throughout its decade-long journey. Caritas Nyahururu plays a vital role in mobilizing group members, building their capacity in sound savings and lending practices and closely monitoring the group’s progress to ensure steady and sustainable growth. It looks ahead to strengthening savings, expanding responsible access to affordable credit, enhancing financial literacy and digital services and promoting greater community resilience. The group stands as a testament to the power of collective action, trust and commitment.
