The Diocese of Nyahururu WASH Program recently conducted a sanitation marketing training for local artisans in Kabage Sub-location, equipping them with skills to construct the Safi Latrine. The training aimed to address the challenge of collapsing soils that have hindered the construction of durable household sanitation facilities in the area. The training covered the procedural construction of a stable substructure designed to withstand loose and unstable soil conditions, which is a critical first step toward ensuring any latrine built on it remains safe and durable over time.
Building on this, artisans were also equipped with the skills to construct a Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrine. Combined with a stable substructure suited to the area’s soil conditions, this makes the Safi Latrine both structurally sound and hygienically effective, directly addressing the twin challenges of unstable ground and poor sanitation hygiene that have affected the sub-location.
By strengthening the capacity of local artisans, the program aims to promote the adoption of resilient, safe and affordable sanitation technologies, ultimately improving access to sustainable sanitation.
