Uraia Trust is committed to making a major contribution to developing an informed and educated citizenry in Kenya, that addresses its contextual realities, and which then leads on to that citizenry being engaged in various reform activities at various levels. Caritas Nyahururu is implementing this governance program in parts of Laikipia county; Githiga and Sosian Wards. The program commenced in the year 2019 through to 2021. It resumed in July 2022 and again closed in the month of May 2024. Recently, the program was extended for six months from October 2024 to March 2025.
Caritas Nyahururu was working with women, children, youth, persons living with disabilities and the governance institution with a common aim of promoting democratic governance and human rights; aiming to enhance different community involvement in peace and conflict transformation, good governance, respect of human right and environmental conservation through research, awareness creation, advocacy and capacity building initiatives.
EXPECTED OUTCOME
“Increased responsiveness and accountability in public spaces in Laikipia County.”
This was being achieved through:
· Strengthened citizen engagement in governance processes in Laikipia County.
· Strengthened citizen initiatives to monitor service delivery in Laikipia County.
· Strengthened citizen engagement in Public Finance Management in Laikipia County.
· Strengthened organizational capacity in Project Management
ACHIEVEMENTS
The partnership between Caritas Nyahururu, the Laikipia County Government, and other stakeholders brought significant improvements in healthcare, education, and infrastructure in Laikipia West.
Through civic education, social accountability and community engagement, residents have become active participants in shaping their own development. Caritas Nyahururu continues to play a critical role in advocating for and enabling community-driven development in Laikipia West.
Some of the projects done under the program included an improved healthcare services at Mbogo-ini Dispensary, the rehabilitation of the Dimcom-Sipili Road, and enhanced facilities at Ol’Moran Hospital and Special School.
