From Training to Enterprise: Laikipia CBF Turns Beef Tallow into a Thriving Business

Creating Shared Value with Young People in the Livestock Sector (CASHA) Project continues to demonstrate how entrepreneurship training is transforming the lives of young people across Laikipia County. During a monitoring and mentorship visit, the CASHA team visited Ms. Julia, at her beef tallow processing enterprise in Chumvi Centre. She is a CBF who got the Personal Initiative in Agribusiness (PI-Ag) training and within one month, established her enterprise after identifying beef tallow processing as a viable business opportunity.

Ms. Julia’s journey reflects the practical impact of the CASHA programme in equipping young people with the confidence, skills and business mindset needed to transform ideas into profitable ventures. She now sources beef fat from a butchery in Timau, processes it at her production facility and packages the finished product in both 500gram and 1KG stock keeping unit. These finished products are supplied to two vendors in Nanyuki Town while also serving individual customers through her growing marketing network.

Caritas Nyahururu, who are in a collaboration with Caritas Kenya to implement the CASHA programme in Laikipia County as the service provider for Food for Agriculture Organization (FAO), is focusing on supporting young people’s engagement in livestock value chains and enterprise development from training to the establishment and growth of their businesses.

This growth demonstrates the potential for value addition in livestock products to create employment opportunities while increasing incomes for young entrepreneurs.
