PLANTING THE SEEDS OF LIVING CHARITY IN OL’KALOU DEANERY

On 16th March 2026, at the Ol’kalou Catholic Social Hall, a significant moment of reflection and learning unfolded as leaders and priests from Ol’kalou Deanery gathered for a sensitization meeting under Caritas Nyahururu. What appeared to be a one-day training quietly marked the beginning of a deeper transformation, one that is still taking shape within the hearts and minds of the participants.
During the session, participants were introduced to the identity, mission, and methodology of Caritas, which are grounded in Christian teachings and inspired by scripture, including the healing of the lame beggar and the Parable of the Good Samaritan. For many, this was a moment of rediscovery. Charity, which had often been understood as occasional acts of giving, was reframed as a continuous, relational, and community-driven mission rooted in dignity, love, and justice.
Members reflected that, before the training, much of the charitable work within the parish was well-intentioned but lacked structure and deeper engagement with the real needs of the people. The training challenged this perspective by emphasizing listening, observation, discernment, and animation as essential steps in responding to community challenges. This approach encouraged leaders to see themselves not just as providers of aid, but as facilitators of transformation within their communities.
Participants also expressed a strong desire to move beyond individual acts of charity toward organized, community-led initiatives that foster inclusion and shared responsibility. The group discussions sparked practical ideas on how to better engage parishioners, especially the youth, and how to build systems that can sustainably respond to local needs addressing issues such as poverty, loneliness, and vulnerability.
This experience represents an important first step from learning to internalizing the true meaning of Caritas. While the visible changes at the parish level are yet to begin, the foundation has been firmly laid. The leaders are now equipped not only with knowledge, but with a renewed vision of what it means to serve.
The Ol’kalou Deanery sensitization meeting demonstrates that impact does not always begin with immediate action, but often with a shift in understanding. As these leaders prepare to translate their learning into practice, they carry with them the seeds of a more organized, compassionate, and responsive Church, one that lives out charity not just in moments, but as a sustained expression of faith in action.
